David Kelsey has an invincible conviction that life is going to work out just as he has planned it - if he can just fix 'the situation'.
His one true love, the brilliant, beautiful Annabelle, has married another man. But that doesn't mean they can't still be friends. And even though she is pregnant with her husband Gerald's baby, that surely doesn't mean she won't one day get back together with David. She still loves him, of that he is certain.
David is sure she'll take him back and, under an alias, is setting up a wonderful home for the two of them in a town close by. And everything is just about going to plan until things take a murderous turn, leaving David a desperate man on the run.
This Sweet Sickness A Virago Modern Classic (Audible Audio Edition) Patricia Highsmith William Hope Hachette Audio UK Books
Highsmith fits the bits and pieces of an obsession into place by taking us into the mind of a man who refuses to acknowledge that the woman he loves does not love him. He builds a life founded on the fantasy that she will leave her husband and join him in the house he bought and furnished to her supposed taste. A close reading of the text reveals past events that led to the break-up of the youthful romance, but David can justify his hesitation then and his determination now to be forceful. The supporting characters are as complex as the protagonist, and all in all this is one of several stories that claim the reader's full attention. Highsmith's writing is ueven, but when a plot is well developed it is utterly spellbinding.Product details

This Sweet Sickness A Virago Modern Classic (Audible Audio Edition) Patricia Highsmith William Hope Hachette Audio UK Books Reviews
Very good late night reading!!! I saw a 1960's episode of Alfred Hitchcock entitled "Annabelle" that had the same plot as "This Sweet Sickness". Did Hitchcock base his episode on Highsmith?
If you like Highsmith, then you will like this as well. Not my favorite, as it seemed to take a bit to get going. I couldn't get why the husband let his wife do what she did to him. However, when it started rolling, it got better. I laid it down at first, went to something else. I rarely do that, but, went back and finished and it was worth it. My favorite of hers is Cry Of The Owl.
Not as great as most of her books, but if u like her books-don't skip this one! Full of strange behavior & odd characters - it is a good book.
Good read where the author built the story around the main protagonist, David, whose mental state gradually becomes more erratic as he try's to win over a women he can never marry, or rather 'possess'. The letters exchanged between them are cleverly written as he interprets them in a totally different way to (me) the reader. His double life and the lies he has to tell to keep it that way was well constructed and helped build the story to it's final twist and turn conclusion.
This is a story of obsession. It can be summed up in the form of a joke currently doing the rounds...
My new (old) girlfriend thinks I'm a stalker.
Although technically she's not my girlfriend.
Yet.
If you've ever been the victim of unrequited passion you'll appreciate this story. Aspects of it -particularly around police procedures-seem dated in this age of CSI but that aside it's a story for the ages, focusing on one of the 7 deadly sins-jealousy- and how it can take hold of your mind and your life if not controlled.....
Fun story to read, was easily drawn in. Highsmith had such a knack for getting inside the head of twisted characters with crazy stories.
What's interesting about this book is the insight it offers into the mind of people who don't take no for answer when it comes to love. David Kelsey is determined to get Annabelle back because she belongs to him. The only reason why she's not with him is because he needs to fix "the situation".
What I liked most about this book is that I wouldn't say he's a criminal. He has a goal and everything else he just can't see it. Whatever he does wrong made me sympathyze for him during the entire book. However, I understand that this book was written in the 50's and the police back then wasn't as sharp as they are now, but their incompetence in this novel is jut over the top.
A great book, though, and worth reading if you're a fan of twisted characters.
